Writing, connecting and collaborating
My name is Erin Shachory, and I’m a freelance writer based in the Los Angeles area. I specialize in design, travel and culture, but I really love learning about the people and stories hovering just under the radar.

This post isn’t about the book, although I read this last night. I love Dave Grohl (who doesn’t? The guy seems awesome.) but this book was… fine. As marginally introspective as Thurston Moore’s memoir. Certainly not a mind blower like Kim or Carrie’s books. BUT… today is my childhood best friend Chris’ birthday and he is always mistaken for Dave Grohl. In pic 2, see for yourself, this is when we happened to meet up at 29 Palms Inn in December (that’s his wife Amy, my bonus bff). Pic 3+4… I swear, I’d think this was Chris! Chris is as affable as Dave, only better coz we’ve known each other since we were 3 and grew up together in 29 Palms. At this dinner, he told me how they’d traveled from NorCal to the desert with an old trombone in their car to return to the son of his dad’s friend. That’s Chris. I know it’s not usual to be best friends with a guy if you’re a girl, and even less usual to stay close for (gulp) 50 years… but here we are. Happy birthday, Chris!

My latest reading endeavor: Unreasonable Hospitality by Will Guidara. In light of its Emmy sweep and the big-sloppy-kiss kind of feeling that The Bear gave us in Season 2, Episode 4 “Forks,” this is the book that Richie is reading during his time “staging” at the fancy restaurant. It’s a call to belonging and culture in a restaurant but applies to all organizations. I was gifted this gorgeous inspirational book by @gojohnnygirl and am loving all the ideas. Nonfiction again, but so so wonderful. I’m already feeling energized for my work with @lidehaiti and @postcardsfromitalypodcast and lotsa other projects yet to be realized. It’s all about belonging, people.

And onto the next one, “Hunger Makes Me a Modern Girl” by Carrie Brownstein of Sleater-Kinney. From the jump, she reminds us that when we see live music, it’s about being with our friends, not about the music itself. We listen to songs together and we imprint memories, they become part of the fabric of our lives and relationships. It’s not about the bands themselves. It’s how they made us feel. Super excited to read this one.

Happy almost new year. I’ve been obsessed with memoirs by women in rock lately and this is one of my favorites, “Girl in a Band” by Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth. Been thinking a little about feminism and “women’s empowerment” (Kim has some stuff to say about this wording too because who’s granting the “power” to women in that case? It’s demeaning when you think about it.) And so this passage struck me as a good one to ring in the new year with. “No one can be all things” - and maybe 2024 is when I trust that truth. ❤️🫶⚡️ Also an image of one of the most punk women I know, my mother in law, posting up before Marlowe’s show the other night.

😭😭😭 … So you hope, as your kids go off into the great big unknown, that they will find their space, and their people, and the people who truly *see* them, and help them see themselves… ❤️

Happy Fall y’all. Nothing spooky 👻 just some October photos of kids, cats, leaves, and other fall time treats 🍁 We went to New England and all I got was some syrup and a lotta love for Vermont. 🍁 Visited Serena in NYC, saw Marlowe in Minneapolis, and welcomed Emme home for a weekend. Got tipsy at a distillery in DTLA with my friend/sister in law Amy (nice that she can do double duty 🧡). 🎃 Ready for some weather to fit the mood now. 🧡💛🧡

The kids are alright… At the very end of my trip back east, I added an extra few days in Minneapolis to see Marlowe for the first time since dropping her off at college in Chicago in August, and we worked our date around seeing our friends @speedoflightband on their first big tour, supporting @badreligionband . It was fun for so many reasons, but filled us both up with lots of love and laughter and the thrill of live music. Look, I love Spotify as much as the next person, but it will NEVER replace the excitement of hearing/seeing a band. One of my favorite parts was seeing hardcore BR fans join the SOL merch line just to say hello to the future of rock n roll. ☺️ I love these kids, not just for their music but because they’re good humans and they will change the business of music. And if they don’t, come find me at the merch table and I’ll fight ya 🤣

I don’t post a lot but life is somehow going on even without kids in the house. These pictures are a testament to celebrating 25 years together at a fab rooftop, a Hollywood museum trek with my beloved auntie, volleyball in Simi with the MB crew, local band show with my beloved band mama friends (missing is @karukoo and @nagysoo ), an outtake from my podcast, and a typical Friday night at the office (Office?). 🍁
